Is Rafting on the Soča River Too Demanding for Me?

🗓️ Last updated: March 2026 | Current status: Information relevant for Summer Season 2026

Quick Answer: How fit do I need to be?

In short: Rafting is an active adventure, but you don't need to be an athlete! If you can climb a few flights of stairs or enjoy a 2km walk, you have plenty of energy for the Soča. We provide all the gear and a ``safe-exit`` point halfway through if you feel tired.

We get it. You’ve seen the photos of splashing waves and thought: ‘That looks amazing, but… is it too rough for a normal human like me?’ You’re not alone. Every day, we welcome guests who haven’t seen the inside of a gym since everyone was wandering into traffic to catch a Charizard in Pokémon GO back in 2016.

At Bovec Rafting Team, we don’t expect you to be a marathon runner. We’re here to handle the technical stuff while you handle the smiles (and maybe a bit of paddling). Whether you’re a self-proclaimed couch potato or just someone on a relaxing holiday, the Soča has a seat for you. Let’s clear the air and talk about what ‘demanding’ really means on the river.

Do I need to be an athlete?

NO

In fact, rafting is the least demanding of all outdoor sports in Bovec. Unlike canyoning or hiking, where you have to walk and jump, here you simply sit in the boat and let the river do most of the work. If you have a base level of mobility, you will enjoy the splashes without any problems.

How does rafting compare to other activities?

To help you choose the right level of adventure, here is our quick Bovec “Sweat Factor” guide based on the International Scale of River Difficulty:

  • RAFTING: Low to Moderate. Mostly sitting and team paddling. Suitable for almost everyone.
  • ZIPLINE: Low. High adrenaline due to heights, but zero physical effort required.
  • CANYONING SUŠEC: Moderate. Involves hiking to the top and some active sliding and jumping.
  • KAYAKING: Moderate to High. Requires more active balance and technical focus.
  • CANYONING FRATARICA: High. Our “Big Boss” tour. Requires strength for rappelling and serious heights (including a 50m waterfall).

Is it okay if I’m not a “gym person”?

YES

Absolutely. You don’t need big muscles to paddle. You will be in a boat with up to 8 other people, so the effort is shared. Our guides will teach you how to use your body weight and efficient techniques so that the paddling feels more like fun teamwork than a heavy workout.

Am I too old (or too young) for this?

PROBABLY NOT

Rafting is a “three-generation” sport! We welcome kids from 6 years and active seniors. Small children sit safely in the middle of the boat. We don’t ask them to paddle—not because they can’t, but because they often wave the paddle around like a tennis racket and we want to protect everyone’s “movie star smile” from accidental bumps!

Do I have to paddle?

YES

Yes. Think of it this way: The guide is the driver, but you are the engine. Your guide handles the steering and navigation, but they need your power to move the boat through the waves safely. You only paddle when the guide says “All forward!”. In between, there are beautiful calm sections where you can rest and enjoy the emerald views.

What if I get tired in the middle of the tour?

NO PROBLEM

This is why we are unique! We have an exclusive Safe-Exit at the Srpenica II point. Our guides carry phones on the water; if you feel your energy is low, the guide calls our office. We organize a driver with a van to pick you up (with your dry clothes ready!). You can wait for your friends at the finish line without any pressure.

Are there any weight or height limits?

YES

Safety means the equipment must fit you perfectly. We take pride in being prepared for almost everyone:

  • Wetsuits: We have sizes ranging from 2XS (which usually fits an average 6-year-old) all the way to 4XL.
  • Footwear: Our neoprene boots range from EU size 28 to EU 49.
  • The Life Jacket Test: The most important piece of gear is the life jacket (PFD). If you weigh around 110 kg (240 lbs) or more, we perform a mandatory “life jacket test” in our gear room. If you can safely buckle the jacket, you are ready to go! If not, we cannot take you on the river for your own safety.

Can I join if I have a specific health condition?

Conditions like mild asthma or diabetes are usually fine, but you MUST inform us before the trip. For your safety, we strictly follow the official boating regime and security guidelines, which strictly forbid any alcohol before the trip. We want you alert and happy on the waves! Also, for safety reasons, we cannot take pregnant women or people with serious heart or back injuries.

Do you have a more specific health concern?
Whether it’s asthma, diabetes, or a recent surgery, we’ve prepared a detailed guide to help you decide. Check out our blog: What if I have a specific medical condition?
