First Time Rafting? Facing the Fear

🗓️ Last updated: March 2026 | Current status: Information relevant for Summer Season 2026 (Updated with new Bovec municipality regulations)

Quick Answer: Is it scary for beginners?

In short: No experience? No problem! 90% of our guests are first-timers. We provide top-tier safety gear, professional guides in every boat, and a full safety briefing before we even touch the water. We guide you through the easy waves first to build your confidence.

Let’s be honest: watching a rafting video can feel a bit like watching a high-stakes action movie where everyone knows exactly what they’re doing—except you. You’re probably imagining yourself flying out of the boat like a cartoon character while everyone else paddles like professional Vikings. It’s that classic “First Day at a New School” feeling, but with more neoprene and much colder water.

At Bovec Rafting Team, we’re not looking for the next Indiana Jones. In fact, if your biggest adrenaline rush lately was successfully parallel parking on a busy street or just surviving a family board game night, you’re our perfect guest! We know that 90\% of our visitors are total beginners, and we love it. We’ve spent years turning that “newbie” panic into “When can we go again?”. Let’s clear the air about the “fear factor” and show you why being a beginner is actually the most fun way to experience the SoÄŤa.

Can I go rafting if I’ve never done anything like this before?

YES

Rafting on the Soča is designed for beginners. Most sections we paddle are Class II-III, according to The International Scale of River Difficulty, meaning they are exciting but manageable for novices. Your guide is a licensed professional who acts as your captain. They handle the technical steering, while you just follow simple commands. You’ll be surprised how quickly you feel like a pro!

SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS

NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS

Will I fall into the water?

PROBABLY NOT

It is rare on our standard tours! Our rafts are very stable and designed for the SoÄŤa’s currents. Even if you do take an “unplanned swim,” your life jacket will keep you floating high like a cork. Our guides are certified river rescuers trained to pull you back into the boat in seconds. Just remember: keep your feet up and point them downstream!

Is the SoÄŤa river deep?

NOT REALLY

The depth changes constantly—from 50 cm to a few meters. But here is the secret: it doesn’t matter. You will be wearing a professional 3mm neoprene suit and a high-buoyancy life jacket. You will float effortlessly regardless of the depth. The water is refreshing (around 12–15°C), but our gear keeps you warm and energetic. The SoÄŤa River is so crystal clear that even in the deepest parts, you can see all the way to the bottom.

Can I go if I don’t know how to swim?

IT DEPENDES

This is a very important question! To keep everyone safe and smiling, we have 3 simple scenarios:

  • Scenario 1: I have a deep phobia of water. If you feel an intense, paralyzing fear of water, we honestly suggest a land activity like Zipline Kanin. Rafting should be fun, not a nightmare!
  • Scenario 2: I really don’t know how to swim at all. In this case, the official answer is no. Even though our life jackets (PFDs) provide massive buoyancy and do the work for you, basic swimming skills are required for safety on the SoÄŤa River.
  • Scenario 3: I am a “weak” swimmer, but I am comfortable in the water. No problem! If you can swim a little and you feel okay being in the river, you are welcome to join. BUT, you must tell us at the office before we start. We will inform your guide, who will seat you at the back of the raft, right next to them, so they can keep a close eye on you.

Is there always a guide in my boat?

YES

Always. Every single raft has a professional, licensed guide. We strictly adhere to the official boating regime and security regulations of the SoÄŤa Valley. Important: Safety is our #1 rule, which is why we never load anyone under the influence of alcohol. We need you sharp and alert on the water!

What if I get scared during the trip and want to stop?

NO PROBLEM

We understand that sometimes the adrenaline can be overwhelming. This is why we have our exclusive Safe-Exit point at Srpenica II. If you decide that the first half was enough adventure for one day, you can safely leave the boat there. We will drive you back to Bovec, and you’re still a hero for giving it a go!

Is rafting on the SoÄŤa scary?

NO

We call it “Type 2 Fun”—it’s a bit nerve-wracking at the start, but incredibly empowering once you’re in the waves with your team. That feeling of “I did it!” usually turns the initial fear into the best memory of your vacation.

To ease your mind, here is how the trip looks:

  • The Warm-up (Srpenica I to Srpenica II): The first part of the river is calm and the water isn’t too fast. It’s the perfect time to get used to the paddle and the boat.
  • The Fun Stop: Halfway through, we stop for some serious fun! We have rock jumping and the famous raft slide (where our guides flip one of the boats so you can slide down into the water).
  • The “Exit” Option: Our stop is at the Srpenica II exit point. If anyone feels like they’ve had enough adventure for one day, they can easily hop out here.
  • The Finale (Srpenica II to Trnovo I): For everyone else, the second part of the tour is more dynamic with exciting rapids—but don’t worry, it’s nothing “crazy,” just pure adrenaline and fun!

Most people who are nervous at the start end up asking: “Can we go again?”

Ready to swap your “What-ifs” for “Hell-yes”?

Don’t let a little bit of nerves keep you from the most beautiful emerald experience in Europe. Whether you’re a family with kids or a couple looking for some spice, we promise to take care of you from the moment you step into our base until you’re back at the garden with a cold drink in your hand. You’ve got the courage—we’ve got the gear and the guides. Let’s hit the river together!
