Not far from Srpenica village stands a stone cross, dedicated to the first civilian victim of the World War One in the Soča Valley. Countess Lucy Christalnigg was shot dead on this spot, due to a dreadful mistake.
Along the road that leads from Trnovo ob Soči to the village of Srpenica, you can see a stone cross standing on the right side of the road. It marks the memory of the Countess Lucy Christalnigg, who died here on 10th August, 1914....

First World War is one of the most disturbing chapters of the Soča River valley history book. We mark 100 years since the assassination of Austro-Hungarian archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. The assassination which happened in a town more than 700 km away from Bovec, pulled the whole of Europe in a dreadful war. High mountain battles of the Isonzo front forever marked our region....

A year before Italy entered the 1st World War, Austria-Hungary began to build a strategically important road over the pass Vršič. At the same time, the construction of military cargo cable car began.
When the road over the Vršič pass starts to descend towards the Trenta valley, a beautiful belvedere can be found by the roadside. A plateau stands where the upper station of the military cargo cable car Vršič was set during the time of the Isonzo front....

Along the road to Predel Pass, on the border between Slovenia and Italy, stands a stone pyramid with a bronze statue of dying lion. The memorial is dedicated to a squad of Austrian soldiers who bravely defended the fortress above the monument in the days of Napoleonic wars....
